On-Camera Genre Acting with Casting Director

Are you ready to show Casting the best you can do in your self-tape?

Self-taping is how many auditions go, at least for the first round. Actors need to be their own cinematographers and editors at home. Are you confident not only with your performance skills but with your technical skills?

Join acting & media coach, award-winning filmmaker, and casting director Mark J. Parker for a Virtual On-Camera Acting & Self-Taping class where each student will strengthen their range by practicing multiple scenes in multiple genres and get more self-tape practice. Actors must not only be present and truthful but also technically perfect, deciding where your mark and eyelines are while staying open to the camera. Having multiple devices available is key for this class because self-taping will happen in real time with the group (a computer or tablet for class, and a phone with tripod for self-taping). We'll watch and critique all the self-tapes together in the final class, so bring the popcorn!

Mark J. Parker

Mark J. Parker is an acting & media coach, casting director, award-winning filmmaker & producer, digital content creator, podcaster, and SAG-AFTRA actor. After living and working in New York for 14 years, he moved to southern Maine in 2020. Mark has worked on TV series and films throughout the years, from broadcast series 30 Rock and Ugly Betty to cable series Celebrity Ghost Stories and talk shows Live! With Regis & Kelly and Wendy Williams. He's cast 8 seasons of the popular ABC hidden camera series What Would You Do? (including the new season airing Feb/March 2024) and has cast other TV, digital content and campaigns, and independent films. Many of his short films are available to watch online and you can find his entertainment podcast Release Date Rewind wherever you listen to podcasts or watch on YouTube. He graduated from Fordham University and received a certificate in Producing from NYU’s School of Professional Studies. Imagine yourself in an audition. You may be reviewing a monologue or reciting lines from a scene as you nervously wait to be called in. While preparing, you remind yourself of the notes that you were given by your acting coach. Once in the audition room, you slate and perform your monologue or scene. What happens next is the wild card. The panel of casting, film, and/or TV directors might smile and say, “Thank you, next!” Or they may give you direction and adjustments. In order to take the direction given, you need to have the foundational skills to act and the ability to understand the language and concepts. A casting director or director expects the actor to be trained and ready for the role they’re auditioning for. To succeed in your audition, you need to understand the differences between working with coaches and directors, and the notes you’ll receive from both.
